Water pressure sensors usually contain a physical diaphragm, usually made of silicon, that bends when pressure is applied. The diaphragm is a strain gauge whose resistance changes when a force is applied. This resistor is used to modify the output voltage of the sensor. Some water pressure sensors offer zero-based outputs where zero pressure results in no output signal at all. For example, their output might be in the 0-5V range. Others offer zero voltage voltages ranging from 1-5V. One disadvantage of zero-based output is that it is difficult to identify problems with the sensor itself. For example, in a pumping system, the pump may be configured to start when water pressure exceeds a certain point, which may indicate that water has accumulated to a certain depth. If the Water Pressure Sensor has a 0V signal, this may indicate that the pressure is zero, or the sensor may fail completely, meaning that the pump does not activate when the water level rises, potentially causing flooding. By contrast, a zero reading from a "zero pressure voltage" sensor would clearly indicate failure.
