How a simple switch type Oil Pressure Sensor works: When the ignition is on, but the engine is not running, there is no oil pressure and the switch is off. Low oil pressure warning light on. When the engine starts, the oil pump starts working, building up oil pressure. When the required minimum pressure is reached, the oil pressure switch is turned on and the warning light on the instrument panel is turned off. A common problem is that the Pressure Sensor starts leaking oil. Oil may leak from the sensor itself or from the tread. If the tread leaks, your mechanic may recommend resealing. If the sensor itself leaks, it must be replaced. Another common problem with oil pressure transmitters is the inability to read the oil pressure correctly when it is clogged or fails internally. This can cause low oil pressure warning lights to come on even if there is sufficient pressure. In some cars, the failure of the oil Pressure Transmitter will cause the check engine indicator to come on.
